Manufacturing / Exxon Mobil in talks to buy st...
Last post by Subbulakshmi - December 08, 2020, 05:50:16 PM
Energy supermajor Exxon Mobil Corp is in talks to buy a stake in producing oil and gas fields in India, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on 2nd December 2020 showcasing efforts to raise domestic output to cut imports. Exxon Mobil had in October last year signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to offer its expertise and technology for developing resources in offshore blocks.

Speaking at a webinar series on 'The Road To Atmanirbhar Bharat' organised by Swarajya Magazine, he said India is looking to replicate the Texas model of raising domestic oil and gas production by involving small and mid-sized companies in exploration and production.

"Till 2014, the total acreage given for exploration and production (of oil and gas) was about 90,000 square kilometers. In two rounds of auction of small discovered fields (DSF) and five rounds of Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP), an additional 1.65 lakh sq km of the area has been offered," he said.

The US shale oil and gas revolution was not brought about by big companies. "Small companies have developed the Texas shale oil and gas sector. We are envisaging a similar scenario in India through progressive policy and involving a lot of small and mid-sized companies," he said.

But large companies would obviously be there, he said adding UK supermajor BP is investing USD 5 billion bringing to production the next wave of gas discoveries in KG basin block KG-D6.

Also, Shell and Total are present in India.

"Exxon Mobil is in active discussion with some of our companies to participate in some of our producing fields," he said without giving details.

The October 2019 MoU provided for ONGC and ExxonMobil jointly bidding for exploration assets in India.

ONGC is currently developing deepwater oil and gas blocks on the east coast, which at a peak is envisaged to produce more than 15 million standard cubic meters per day (mmscmd) of gas.

Also in October 2019, Exxon signed another memorandum with the country's biggest refiner Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) to explore ways to supply liquefied natural gas to meet India's burgeoning gas demand.

While Shell operates a 5 million tonnes a year LNG import facility in Gujarat, Total of France has partnered with Adani Group in city gas projects.

Pradhan said the exploration acreage offered speaks volumes about the government's intent and policies.

"If our policy is not investment friendly, if our policy is not open, if our policy is not transparent, how this kind of investment is coming," he asked.

Manufacturing / A ‘Hero’ for Harley customers ...
Last post by Subbulakshmi - December 08, 2020, 05:49:59 PM
Hero MotoCorp, India's largest two-wheeler maker, is revving up to manage well its partnership with the iconic Harley Davidson in pursuit of its plans to leapfrog into the lucrative premium and superbike segment.

For a "seamless transition and smooth running" of the new business, Hero has set up a separate vertical,

"Focused on ensuring a smooth transition for Harley customers, Hero MotoCorp has started putting together a strategic team comprising senior executives from different key functions, including sales and after-sales, marketing, product development and finance," a top industry executive familiar with the development, told ET Auto on condition of anonymity.

"This team has also been proactively engaging with the present Harley dealers to ensure their integration into the core Hero distribution network well before the dealers' contract with the American company comes to an end on December 31, he added.

According to sources, Hero is looking at bringing on board more than a dozen of the current Harley-Davidson dealers into its fold across different regional markets that would help extend services to the existing customers and help in the outreach to the new ones.

When contacted, a Hero MotoCorp spokesperson declined to comment on the developments, saying that the company will make an announcement at "an appropriate time soon."

While around 10 Harley dealers in the country have already signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Hero MotoCorp, some more Harley dealers are "keen on joining Hero, considering the continuity and immense business opportunity that it presents. Hero may eventually accommodate about three to four more Harley dealers in its fold, and this process is likely to be completed over the next week or ten days," another industry executive privy to the developments said.

Hero has put in place an extensive arrangement to ensure that every Harley owner in the country will continue to have a hassle-free experience in service and spare parts availability. However, the present state of affairs in terms of service and spare parts availability to the Harley customers could not be independently verified immediately.

"Hero MotoCorp is determined to ensure that the existing Harley bike users and potential buyers face absolutely no hassle during the transition and thereafter. The company has been working on putting in place a sales, distribution and customer outreach programme that will be rolled out soon," he added.

"The partnership with Harley is a very significant milestone in the premium journey of Hero started about three years ago with the launch of the XPulse and the Xtreme range of motorcycles. Both these motorcycles have been successful, and these brands have helped Hero to undertake a youthful makeover," another industry source told ET Auto.

"The partnership between Hero and Harley is a win-win for both entities. Harley could not have chosen a better partner than Hero in continuing its India presence, even while exiting this critical market with a hopeless scenario. Hero is the quintessential home-grown brand and understands the nooks and corners of this market. With its extensive network of dealerships and service and spare parts outlets spread across the country, Hero may actually grow Harley's presence in the India market – something that the American company could not achieve despite its long presence," another source - a leading brand advisor with a prominent advertising firm that works with Hero - told ET Auto on condition of anonymity.

"Similarly, the licensing agreement, allowing Hero to develop Harley products for the India market is a huge endorsement by the global motorcycling giant of Hero's in-house design, development and manufacturing capabilities. This is an unequivocal signal of the rapid progress that Hero has made in a short span of time since separating from its erstwhile technology partner Honda Motors of Japan in 2010-11," he added.

Since the announcement of the company's exit, Harley's existing dealers in the country had voiced their dissatisfaction with the compensation package offered to them. Their contracts with the US company runs till the end of the current calendar year. Many of these are also contemplating legal action against the American two-wheeler entity on breach of trust and other proprietary issues.

Harley Davidson recently announced its exit from India as part of its global 'Rewire' strategy and soon after announced an alliance with the country's largest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp for sales, aftersales and new product development in India.

In October this year, Harley-Davidson and Hero MotoCorp announced that the two would ride together in India. Under the arrangement Hero, besides managing the brand and sales in the domestic market, is likely to harness the technology and engines from the American company to pursue its plans to leapfrog into the lucrative premium and superbike segment.

Manufacturing / Hindalco to invest Rs 730 cror...
Last post by Subbulakshmi - December 08, 2020, 05:49:37 PM
Aditya Birla group firm Hindalco Industries on Monday said it plans to set up a 34,000-tonne aluminium extrusion plant at Silvassa, in Dadra and Nagar Haveli union territory, at an investment of Rs 730 crore. In a regulatory filing, Hindalco said the new plant will service the fast-growing market for extruded aluminium products in the western and southern regions.
Hindalco said the Rs 730-crore project in Silvassa signals a big step forward in Hindalco's downstream strategy as the company revives its long-term downstream investment plan. The company said its intent is to build a larger value-added product portfolio over the next few years. "This investment indicates confidence in the economic revival, which in turn will grow the demand for downstream value-added products," the company added.
Satish Pai, Managing Director, Hindalco Industries, said: "We are seeing a revival in the economy, with demand picking in the building and construction and automotive sectors. This has given us the confidence to move forward. The Silvassa facility will enable us to service our customers faster, with an offering of high-end quality aluminium products."
Hindalco said the aluminium extrusion market in India is expected to grow exponentially - from the current level of around 373,000 tonnes to reach about 850,000 tonnes by 2030. "The western and southern regions of the domestic market account for over 60 percent of the extrusion market," the company added.
Pai said, "Over the next few years, as part of our downstream strategy, we intend to enhance our capacity from over 3,00,000 tonnes currently, to more than 6,00,000 tonnes with investments of around Rs 7,000 crore
Hindalco's existing extrusion plants in Renukoot in Uttar Pradesh and Alupuram in Kerala cater mainly to the auto, defence, aerospace and industrial segments. Hindalco said commercial production at the plant is expected to start in 24 months.
